About Saint Joseph University
In 1851, 30 men gathered in the courtyard of Saint Joseph’s Church, only one block from the location where the country was founded, Independence Hall, to discuss the possibility of creating an institute of higher learning with a Jesuit focus. This was not the first time such a school had been proposed. As far back as 1741, a Jesuit college was proposed and planned by the first pastor of Old St. Joseph’s, Joseph Greaton, S.J. Father Greaton’s dream did not become a reality for over 100 years due to dissension among the Philadelphia Catholic community and the suppression of the Jesuit faith during the early years of the country.
Initially, classes at St. Joseph’s were held in the church until a new location on Filbert Street was identified in 1856. Due to financial difficulties, the school moved back to the church in 1860. Enrollment dropped significantly, adding to the financial hardship of the school, during the Civil War. When the war ended, enrollment grew and a new location for the campus was found between 17th and 18th Streets. The school moved to the new location in 1889.
By 1923, the school had outgrown the downtown location and a capital campaign began to raise $1 million in order to purchase 23 acres in a residential area outside of Philadelphia. It was very successful and construction began in 1925 with the new campus opening in 1927. An evening school was established in 1943 and women were admitted in 1970. It became Saint Joseph University in 1978.
Today, there are more than 8,400 students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs. Saint Joseph’s is one of only 27 Jesuit colleges and universities in the country. U.S. News and World Report named the school among the top 20 Best Colleges in the North in 2018 and the top ten for Best Colleges for Veterans that same year. Forbes ranks the school as one of America’s Top Colleges and Princeton Review also ranks Saint Joseph’s as one of the Best Colleges.
