20 New Media Scholarships

1. The Bret Ratner Grant

DEADLINE: Ongoing

Named after and provided by Hollywood director Bret Ratner, the Bret Ratner Grant provides up to $15,000 in tuition grants for up to 100 students enrolled in one of the New York Film Academy’s filmmaking programs. In order to qualify, students need to verify financial need. Dependent students can verify need by submitting a copy of their parents’ tax statements; independent students submit their own tax statements as proof. Students also need to submit a personal statement outlining why they want to attend the New York Film Academy.

2. Joel Cartun Scholarship

Sponsored by the Lewis M. Gabbe Foundation, the $1,000 Joel Cartun Scholarship is offered by the Electronic Document Scholarship Foundation or EDSF in support of students seeking careers in the field of document management and graphic communication. The application period runs from January 1st through May 1st, and recipients are announced in July. 3. Mary Quon Moy Ing Memorial Scholarship

The Asian American Journalist Association seeks to recognize students of Asian heritage who wish to pursue careers in the media, and they offer a $2,000 Mary Quon Moy Ing Memorial Scholarship in honor of international correspondent Dorothy Ing Russell. For qualification, students need to commit to the mission of the AAJA and demonstrate a desire to become active journalists in their communities. Students also must be a high school senior, undergraduate students or full-time graduate students for the fall and spring semesters.

4. Marketing EDGE Scholarship Awards

DEADLINE: May 9th

Formerly known as the Direct Marketing Educational Foundation, Marketing EDGE awards a variety of scholarships to students pursuing undergraduate or graduate studies in the field of marketing. In order to qualify, students need to be U.S. citizens or permanent residents; enrolled in a four-year, accredited school; hold a 3.0 minimum GPA; and prove that they are committed to marketing by taking at least two courses focused on marketing related topics. The exact amount of the scholarships for new media varies based on student need and other factors as determined by the Foundation.

5. EDSF Board of Directors Scholarships

Offered in conjunction with the Electronic Document Scholarship Foundation, the EDSF Board of Directors Scholarship awards several scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 depending on varying factors and need. Eligible recipients of this award will be students who hold a minimum 3.0 GPA, are interested in careers within the field of document management and graphic communications, and are enrolled in an accredited school for the purpose of earning a degree in the aforementioned field. 6. The James Alan Cox Foundation for Student Photojournalists

Named after Phoenix photojournalist James Cox, the James Alan Cox Foundation for Student Photojournalists grants scholarships to high school and college students who want to pursue photojournalism and who demonstrate outstanding work in the field. Awards include: five digital cameras for five different high school students; five $2,500 scholarships for college or technical school applicants; one $2,500 scholarship to one graduate student. Specific information for each scholarship is posted in the summer. Students should note that all applications must be submitted online; mailed applications will not be considered.

7. ESA Foundation Computer and Video Game Scholarship

The Entertainment Software Association grants 30 scholarships each year to women and minority students interested in pursuing careers that center on computers and video game arts. Each scholarship is worth up to $3,000. In addition to being a woman or minority student, applicants for the scholarship must be enrolled in an accredited school within the United States, maintain a 2.75 GPA and be U.S. citizens. 8. Judy Corman Memorial Scholarship and Internship from Scholastic

Presented in conjunction with New York Women in Communications, Inc. or NYWICI, the Judy Corman Memorial Scholarship and Internship is an opportunity provided by children’s book publisher Scholastic that enables students looking for scholarships for new media to work as paid summer interns at Scholastic’s New York headquarters. The scholarship is available to students who are permanent residents of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut or Pennsylvania. Graduate applicants must also be members of the NYWICI. 12. Stoody-West Graduate Fellowship

13. Print and Graphics Scholarship Foundation Scholarships

DEADLINE: April 1st

Available to students who wish to pursue careers in print media communication and design, the scholarships offered by the Print and Graphics Scholarship Foundation or PGSF award an average of $2,000 to more than 200 students annually. In order to qualify for the award, students must have graduated high school and been accepted into a two- or four-year degree program within the field of print communications. They must also maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA and post regular updates on the PGSF Facebook page. Students may renew the award as long as they continue to fulfill all eligibility requirements.

14. Carole Fielding Student Grants

Presented by the University Film & Video Association, the Carole Fielding Student Grants enable students to pursue academic careers related to film and video at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Students must be sponsored by a member of the UFVA and submit a project proposal including budget and relevant supporting documentation. The amount of each award varies, and judges may award multiple grants or awards based on need and funding of the grant per year. Typically, recipients may be awarded up to 50 percent of their total production cost.

15. Wayne Alexander Memorial Scholarship

AXIS, Inc. and the Electronic Document Scholarship Foundation together offer the Wayne Alexander Memorial Scholarship to eligible students who meet the requirements for all EDSF scholarship programs.
